Tootsie is my little tortie manx who is approximately 3 years old. This shot was taken on 6/17/11 with my studio strobes. My intention was to take photos of water splashing after dropping objects into it. Tootsie made it a point to lay down on my tabletop and do whatever was necessary to be the center of attention. She has the typical comical manx appearance with big bright surprised looking eyes/expression.

My friend James Marshall spotting something while we were shooting macro on 9/22/13. The object was so small we had absolutely no idea what we were looking at. With the help of a macro lens and full extension tube set it was more than obvious what these two flies were up to. I must admit I am impressed by their acrobatics.

Loxahatchee Ambush Bug

Ambush bugs hide on flowers or plants from which they ambush their prey. When prey approaches closely enough, the ambush bug grasps it with its front legs. The upper section (tibia) of each foreleg has teethlike structures that mesh into similar structures on the lower, greatly thickened leg section (femur). Holding its victim in these pincers, the ambush bug inserts its short beak and sucks out the body fluids.

Went to Arthur R Marshall wildlife refuge to shoot macro with James Marshall early this morning. Spotting small insects that are highly camouflaged is a challenge in of itself. Having a second pair of eyes to scan every available inch of a plant helps tremendously.

I commonly spot ambush bugs underneath the spanish needle wildflower that are common here in south Florida. If you are ever around a large amount of them slowly bend the flower over and look for anything abnormal. The ambush bug has similar colors and as you can see from the scale of the insect next to this already tiny wildflower it’s a very small…

Graffiti Art by Eduardo Mendieta

Via Flickr:
Eduardo has some superb graffiti that has been showcased in various places in West Palm Beach. I previously knew of one that I used to see when I frequented a certain club.

Today while walking downtown west palm beach I stumbled upon two next to each other. I saw them previously on his website, but had no idea they were in my own backyard!

It was a nice surprise.

Please visit his site to view the entire mural as well as his other artwork.

What do you get when you cross a Harley motorcyle with a jet-ski? Why this of course! I wasn’t sure what to expect while walking around downtown West Palm Beach.  Let me start over… I DIDN’T EXPECT TO SEE A JETSKI CONVERTED INTO A MOTORCYCLE.

I don’t know what was more puzzling. This frankensteined vehicle or the weird look the drive gave me.  You know, because this is such a usual sight!?

A local medical center typically leaves the property gates open. We marched in and took advantage of a large expanse of grass. There was a large building just south of us and we could hear people chatting away with their windows open watching us. These poses didn’t last very long and lucky for us we had some real special results. Have you ever laid in south Florida grass? It’s nothing you will want to do for more than a few minutes!
